Cruise industry implements lifeboat-training program on all ships

The Cruise Lines International Association and the European Cruise Council have announced their adoption of a new training policy on lifeboats. The Life Boat Loading for Training Purposes policy takes effect immediately and requires crew on all member ships to undergo a launching and full-loading procedure for a lifeboat at least once every six months. “We remain fully committed to exploring further enhancements in a number of areas that will add to the industry’s excellent safety record,” said CLIA President and CEO Christine Duffy.

American is the first US airline to replace all paper manuals with iPads in its cockpits

The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday that pilots on American Airlines flights would be allowed to use iPads for the “electronic flight bag,” replacing the last bit of paper that pilot deal with, such as when flying below 10,000 feet.

Oddly, the FAA will continue to prevent passengers from using iPads (and similar electronic devices) during take-off and landing — precisely when the pilots will be using their iPads as flight manuals.
